The Contemporary Period

The Civil Rights Movement eliminated such restrictions and helped usher in a revival of immigrant voting rights. New York City was the first place to restore immigrant voting in community school board elections beginning in 1969, and other municipalities restored immigrant voting rights during the Sanctuary Movement in the 1990s and 2000s.

Since then, campaigns for immigrant voting rights have expanded to a growing number of cities in many states.
